Stress management encompasses techniques intended to equip a person with effective coping mechanisms for dealing with psychological stress. As we mature, we develop coping mechanisms to deal with daily stress but for some individuals, stress can be psychologically draining which can affect their daily lives. Stress is considered a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that “demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize” as defined by Richard S. Lazarus. In some cases, stress can be helpful in pushing us and making us separate between tasks that are important and ones that are not. In other cases, stress can be overwhelming and cause people to go into panic or cause them to stop functioning in a productive manner.
Stress in its earlier and reversible stage can lead to poor sleep, bad temper, hours of work with less achievement, repeated minor sickness, etc. These negative consequences can also affect the people surrounding the individual including friends, family, coworkers, etc. It is important to recognize these signs early on and take the precautionary steps towards relieving the stress.
Stress can come from the home, the work place, anywhere really. There isn’t one anecdote for all stress but if we take the initiative to learn stress management techniques, we can better deal with different forms of stress.
By learning what increases stress in your life, you can learn how to better react to it. If you can understand the stress, you can see where it formed from and why it brings on such feelings. You also need to understand what you can change in your life to reduce stress. Can you avoid the stress by changing your environment? Practice makes perfect and if you can build up your stress reserves, you can better control your emotions and the situations you are put in.
